Futures Past

She met with my future;

I met with her past

Wrapped in hopeful dreams

Now memories built to last

In the stitching of the seams

That binds us together

We walk a precious tightrope:

The time is now or never

To cross the bridges

Leading to a destiny unknown

The territory is far and wide

Yet still ours to roam

Before surrendering to sleep

Suddenly so evasive

Amidst a cold silence

That remains not comforting but abrasive

I wait to awaken in nightmares anew

Another future of formidable darkness

Where the only comfort I won and lost was you

My Moonflower

From the moon of your face

Flow waves of bounteous desire

Emanating back and forth

Through flickering candle fire

Illuminating the flowering grace

Of your rose petal lips

That pursed in dreaming

Await to be kissed by

The pull of Gravity

That brings you back down to Earth

Awakening from sleep

As from the waters of your birth

I dig myself in so that my traces may you keep

In the heart of my moonflower, anchored crater deep

Horizon

The disconcerting yet reassuring horizon

Like open and eternal arms stretching out

To wrap around

The body of the Earth

Guiding lost sailors toward far away shores

Will I find love there? They ask

As the wind beats into their sails

A hope to capsize previous fails

Their hunger for more

Rum and whiskey blacks out the lies

Drunken and driving forward

Toward ever blurred lines

And the distant lady calling,

A siren on the horizon

You are my lady in waiting,

Waiting for a sign

Goodnight Is Not Goodbye

Goodnight my dearest one, goodnight!

We return to the place where dreams lie

But for now, it’s not goodbye

Not until the stars

That burn within your eyes

Begin to fade

And the tongue that speaks

Soft words of love

Suddenly has nothing to say

No, not until my arms

So full of life begin to weigh down

With the burden of Death

Carrying its reeking smell

Heavy upon me

Like an albatross around my neck

Nay, lover

You are to me as beautiful

As a small bird, frail and injured

In the palm of my hand;

I am there to protect,

You are there to understand

Life’s nature

Goes on insufferably

Until the day we die

But until that moment is upon us

Let us say goodnight

And not goodbye…

There You’ll Find Me

Spots of sunshine

Fly over the page

The sun still shines

When there’s nothing to say

In the place where

Silence reigns supreme

I will still be with you

In the fragments of a dream

Swimming in shadows,

Sheltered by waves of peace

There you’ll find me

Scattered like autumn leaves

Under a tree in the shade

(Your eyes squinting to see

At what lies beneath)

Rolled out like parchment

My shapeless form stretches out, waiting

To be mapped by your hands

And coloured blue

In a sea of love that waits to kiss the land

Sunday Sleeves

Does my jumper

Say that I’ve given up on life?

Do you still dream

Of being somebody else’s wife?

As I try to figure out

What to wear to Church on Sundays

Lest of all, my heart on my sleeve;

Oh those fabricated sentimental tendencies!

That whistle and wane

In the distance

Like chapel bells

Calling, calling…

Calling out your name,

Come out from your hide!

The cave door rolls open;

I am resurrected. I am alive.

The Meaning of Light

I stand

Looking from the outside in

“Do not be a part of the world”

They said             it’s full of sin

Little do they know

I am

The planet orbiting their star

And every degree travelled

Brings me to where you are

But the problem is not me,

The problem is you.

Through each motion

There casts a clearer point of view:

To see quite perfectly

Where lies dust

From where lies dirt;

That from whence came meaning

Is not of death

But of birth

So that in all things

I will not give up the fight,

Until you can convince me

That what I’m orbiting is light

Savage Beauty

Why so savage

A beauty as this

Cast within concrete

Frames?

Harsh grey walls

Object and conceal

The soft poetic soul

The dimmer light reveals

As she slips

Into silence once again;

A scream that is louder

Than the tones

Of angry men

Who by their power

Ordained clothe her

In dark matter too heavy

For Innocence to feign

So that she tries

To hide under its weight

Until no one can see

The savage beauty

That is only beautiful

To you and me

Ode to the Sun

1

Sun,

Shining in your most reverent sky

Now I know why

Men have come to adore you

2

As you start rising

Lovers lay sighing

Feeling your warmth

Between their sheets

3

The treachery of morning

That follows the night

Fades away once you’re in sight

And the world becomes new again

4

Basking in your splendorous rays

Is where I want to be

To catch even a glimpse of you

Is satisfaction guaranteed

5

To see you light up a prairie

Where barley glistens gold

I could watch you all day long;

It never gets old…

6

All I want is to turn as dark

As the dust of the Earth;

Reverse original sin

Return to original birth

7

Colour me cocoa

As brown as the bean

Turn my face away

From white supremacy

8

Shine your light on me

And illumine my mind

Keep me within safe reach;

Protect me from the night

9

Fill me with the joy

Of the labourers’ song;

Under your supervision

They work all day long

10

Share your particles of gaiety

And you will see

This wondrous world

Looks not as bad as it seems!

What I have learnt about: Life and love

Life: There are so many different ways of looking at it, just as there are so many approaches to interpret art, music or literature.

One thing is for certain: we are all, one way or another, trying to seek happiness – whatever we interpret that to be.

In a society that seems to favour seeking money over love, our route to happiness seems to leave us to decide upon which is the better destination to have in mind for the course of the journey.

Sometimes I find myself searching my heart and asking the same questions over and over:

What do I want in life? Is it money? Is it love? Is it possible to master both and therefore obtain ultimate happiness?

And then suddenly I am prompted by a few words from the bible: “You cannot serve both God and money”.

The words seem to ring resoundingly clear. Whether you’re a Christian or not is irrelevant. After all, we are all serving something by catering to its needs and trying to impress it.

When in a relationship, the only person you most deeply care about is your other half. In loving them, you want to assure their happiness and not just your own. It is a free-flowing joyous exchange of give and take, like blessing and receiving.

There really is nothing more blessed than being truly in love. For once life just seems so FULL and brimming over with the amazing love that you and your partner share. It is as if you are living two separate lives simultaneously: the one you have always dreamed of living and knew you were capable of living, contrasted against the one which reality calls you to: the mundane, the ordinary, the everyday…

True love is in fact, none of these things. It goes above and beyond because it is EXTRAORDINARY. Those who have come to know it are both fortunate and unfortunate; but to know it is infinitely better to have never known it at all.

This brings me to say that there is a time for everything, just as the book of Ecclesiastes says in the bible. Perhaps you have been arrested by Love’s stronghold and drowned in its deep and beautiful waters, perhaps you have not. And I use such language to describe it because falling in love is exactly that: falling and surrendering yourself into the arms of the person who loves you the most, but sooner or later, you will hit something – and usually – it’s reality. Sometimes people fall so hard that they never really recover. Others are still falling and may be fortunate enough never to collide with any such obstacle as time or reality or whatever it may be.

But your time will come too. If not now, then soon. There is a time to love and a time to be loved. One day you may be blessed enough to have both of these handed to you on a platter at the same time… but maybe this is not for you right now.

Either way, just remember that we are all desperate souls seeking some form of love, happiness, salvation… you name it! There is someone out there who might need you and in that time it is right that you serve them in whichever way you see fit.

So stop chasing dreams and begin to hold life lightly in your hands. It is precious and not to be smothered!
