The Morning Sorrows

Pain like a sunrise

Greets me every morning

I wake without you

By my side

Your smell still locked

Into the warmth of the bed

Anchors me to its depths

Drowning

The kisses of yesterday

Like bruised fruit

Bittersweet upon my neck

That once lingered now start to fade

As the morning sorrows

Sweetening song

Contained in the mouth of a bird

Ascends and falls unheard;

Didn’t you know that Man’s deadest hour

Is when Nature is most alive?

The Red morning sky

Reveals the shepherd’s warning:

Think more with your heart

And less with the mind

Else lovers fall away; stray and blind

Spanish Waves

There you are:

Sitting, uncurled

As Curiosity feeds

Your wide brown-eyed gaze

Did I un-ruffle you?

I got lost in your maze…

Those were the days:

Watching your Spanish waves

Unfurl upon the broad

Of your shoulders

A beach of dappled skin

Stretched out before me;

Sun-kissed with freckles

By the sun’s bright rays

And my own tender-meaning lips

Softer still, and still unravelling

My love for you like a lock of your hair

Wrapped around your finger twirling

Unties and unbinds itself from ‘truth’

Instead I tied myself to you…

My body: the work of your interpretation

Translating truth into fiction

And back again

Inside The Mirror

Nothing can hold me back

From this life

Even when times are tough

I’ll carry on despite

With no respite

Thinking of you in mind

And wondering

Is it worth my time

When you said:

“Don’t stop believing… ever”

As you made the cord

Between us sever

And end a life long history

Of memories together

But this is now or never

It’s all or nothing

And yet I see nothing at all;

Standing inside the mirror

Reveals the writing on the wall

And shoulders that are heavy

From heaving this burden;

My back will only break

Once they close the curtain…

The Final Sleep

I will weep over your sheets

Once you are gone;

Let my conscience stumble

And refuse to carry on

Clothe your memory in wreaths…

Oh the bitter ache that it leaves!

As you dissolve into a foreign land

And I’m left struggling to understand

And wander aimlessly, following Grief

Down every street; confused

As to her direction

That guides the path of my feet

Until my tears

Like ocean waves swelling

Can contain themselves no longer

And pouring forth from my eyes

Like your soul’s last dying cry

That leaves me haunted every time…

Refract Your Heart

Buried treasure

Metres deep

Your heart is an ocean

Of secrets you keep

Away from me

Like a hand of cards;

The hand you deal

Cuts like glass

And I am the shard

Scattered and broken

In your mind

But to uncover the rainbow

You must refract the light

So hold me up to your rays

And I will make your path alter;

As long as the rupture’s welcomed

The rapture won’t falter…

History of Lovers

You’ve locked me

Into your embrace again;

I’m Daniel in the lion’s den.

Just as I was a stone’s throw away

From throwing us away

You opened up your arms of love

And begged me to stay

Was it a lifeline

Or a noose with which

To hang my neck?

Are we on board this ship

Or just a sinking wreck?

Because this sinking

Started long ago

I chose to hold on

As the miraculous survivor;

Looked upon our love

And tried to revive her

When all that remained

Were fragments of disarray:

A history of lovers,

Unwilling to leave

And yet unwilling to stay.

La Petite Mort

Crossing familiar territory

One inch at a time

To feel your pulse throbbing

And the delicate nodules

Of your spine

Still supple

Still as smooth as a peach

Your wingspan opened up

But not out of reach

To fly the distance

We didn’t dare to cover

Instead chased love away

Looking to the affections of another

Lying together now:

Head to head, toe to toe, arm in arm

The storm is over

Time to embrace the calm

Breathe in my love and

Exhale the past

Our vows, they were broken

Before they had chance to last

Accept human fragility

And Time’s loss wasting away

Lay with me again

And we will die to live another day

Ode to the Sun

1

Sun,

Shining in your most reverent sky

Now I know why

Men have come to adore you

2

As you start rising

Lovers lay sighing

Feeling your warmth

Between their sheets

3

The treachery of morning

That follows the night

Fades away once you’re in sight

And the world becomes new again

4

Basking in your splendorous rays

Is where I want to be

To catch even a glimpse of you

Is satisfaction guaranteed

5

To see you light up a prairie

Where barley glistens gold

I could watch you all day long;

It never gets old…

6

All I want is to turn as dark

As the dust of the Earth;

Reverse original sin

Return to original birth

7

Colour me cocoa

As brown as the bean

Turn my face away

From white supremacy

8

Shine your light on me

And illumine my mind

Keep me within safe reach;

Protect me from the night

9

Fill me with the joy

Of the labourers’ song;

Under your supervision

They work all day long

10

Share your particles of gaiety

And you will see

This wondrous world

Looks not as bad as it seems!

Love’s Flight

The pangs of love

Take time to articulate

(Perhaps by now

They have spoken too late…)

Like a kite

I let you sail towards

An unknown destination;

A bottled message of love

Washed upon the shore

Of some foreign nation

But somehow

You found a way back

As if you knew

I was already here waiting

For the slow and steady tide

That abates with your sigh

Until you are ready to fly

Upon its wings of love again.
